The following is a brief itinerary of what to expect from our Laos tour. This is not ”set in stone” some items may be subject to change. Others may be added.
We frequently add in some off road detours when time and location allow. All accommodation is very comfortable with en-suite rooms and breakfast.
We generally leave at 9am and arrive at next destination in plenty of time for a shower, massage and beer, before dinner.
There is a back-up truck driven by a competent mechanic to carry luggage and spare parts. You will be accompanied by a guide who will ride with you.
We are also obliged to take a Laos guide with us while we are in Laos. He rides in the truck, helps and translates for us whenever we need him to.
We’ll pick you up at the airport or your hotel in Chiang Mai.
After a nice 30 min. drive, we arrive at our base camp 30 kms north of Chiang Mai city.
Time for a little sightseeing and relax in our resort before the riding starts in the morning.
After checking out the riding gear and the bikes we’ll go for a ride in the mountain area around our home. You’ll get used to the bike and we have the chance to modify small things, like handlebar position e.g. on your bike.
We depart basecamp on a mixture of dirt roads and tarmac on a cross country route through forests and wooden villages to the heart of Chaing Rai. We can take a short detour to the famous White Temple just before we get to our destination.
We make our way, by road, to Chaing Khong by way of the Golden Triangle then after some paperwork and border checks (which can take some time), we cross into Laos. We will spend the rest of the day checking out the border town Huay Xai. Visiting ancient temples stroll along local markets and maybe having a relaxing Lao Massage before having dinner at a riverside restaurant.
The off road will be quite dusty if the weather has been dry. We pass through several hill tribe villages, where all the kids run next to the road and waving to us. Wherever we stop – we’ll be surrounded by the whole village. We spend almost the whole day for doing these 150 km before we arrive in Pakbeng. The village is located directly on the Mekong river. It’s the place where travelers who are going with a slow boat from Huay Xay to Luang Prabang having a break for the night. It’s like a ghost town during the day and it’s coming alive in the evening.
230 km of very small winding tarmac road through the mountains of Northern Laos leads us to Nong Kiaw a beautiful village nestled in picture poscard scenery on the Nam Ou river
Rest day. We take a boat ride 15km up the Nam Ou River through beautiful scenery to a remote village for lunch where the scenery is truly breathtaking. If you have energy in the afternoon you can trek to a mountain viewpoint, overlooking the town, to see the stunning sunset over the river.
The ancient yet cosmopoliitan town of Luang Prabang , was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Time to get some laundry done, shopping at the local market and a half day ride around to one of the most beautiful waterfalls you’ll ever see. In the evening we will have dinner in one of the riverside restaurants enjoying the sunset over the Mekong river.
Today we have the opportunity to do a boat ride on the Mekong river to the famous “Pak Ou” cave. On the way back we will visit the “whiskey village” where rice whiskey is made with very simple equipment. Back in Luang Prabang is so much more to see, like “Wat Phousi” a temple on a hill in the middle of the city, or just relax in a cafe.
A day of riding one of the most scenic, twisty roads you’ve ever ridden, leads us back to Thailand. A couple of river crossings – real remote hill tribe villages and parts of it untouched jungle – just everything for a good riding day. Crossing back into Thailand is quickly done and we will arrive late afternoon in a small resort.
Another day of great riding Twisty mountain roads all paved lead us to Phayao which is settled on a beautiful lake. If fish is one of your favorites then you are here in heaven. Lots of restaurants selling fresh fish in different variations
Great tarmac roads with countless bends and almost no traffic brings us to Chiang Dao. After checking into an beautiful resort we will visit a natural hot spring where we can relax in the hot water in one of the pools. Back in the resort we will have fantastic Thai dinner.
After visiting a elephant training camp we will have another exiting day of off- and on road riding through hilly northern Thailand. Our destination for today is our base camp in Mae Malai
Transfer to the airport. Flight back or why not try another few days of beach holiday in the South of Thailand
